Common Network Terms

Node





A network junction or connection point.




Client





A communication network that uses dedicated servers.




Server





A computer system that serves as a central reposito
ry of data and programs shared by users in a network.



Hub





A device for connecting multiple twisted pair of fiber optic Ethernet devices to
gether and thus making them act as a single network segment.



Network Interface Cards (NIC)





The hardware added to the machine that allows it to communicate with the network.




Network Operating System (NOS)






An operating system that contains components and programs that allow a computer on a
network to serve requests from other computer for data and provide access to other resources.




Distributed Processing





The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system.




Host Computer





A computer that acts as a source of information or signals. The term can refer to any computer, from a centralized mainframe to a server to a client PC.




Network Manager





A software utility aimed at simplifying the use of computer networks on Linux and other Unix-like operating system.
